Known for bringing intensity and depth to his characters, Hirsch has built a diverse body of work that includes independent films, major Hollywood productions, and beloved animated adventures.
One of his most acclaimed performances came in Sean Penn’s Into the Wild, in which he portrayed Christopher McCandless, a young man who leaves his conventional life behind to travel across North America and into the Alaskan wilderness. The physically demanding role placed Hirsch at the heart of a story about freedom, human connection, and the search for meaning—a film with a particularly strong connection to Alaska.
For fans of high-speed adventure, Hirsch is instantly recognizable as the title character in the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer. Bringing the classic animated hero to live action, he stepped into the driver’s seat of the Mach 5 for a visually striking story of family, loyalty, and racing against the odds. The film has since earned an enthusiastic following among fans of its bold style and faithful embrace of its animated roots.
Hirsch’s other notable roles include Matthew Kidman in The Girl Next Door, skateboarder Jay Adams in Lords of Dogtown, and Johnny Truelove in Alpha Dog. His performances in these films showcase his range, from an ambitious teenager caught up in an unexpected romance to complicated figures in stories inspired by real events.
His filmography also includes Milk, in which he played activist Cleve Jones; Lone Survivor, portraying Navy SEAL Danny Dietz; and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, appearing as hairstylist Jay Sebring.
Animation fans will recognize Hirsch as the voice of Jim Lake Jr. in Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, taking over the role during the series’ third season. He continued voicing the young hero in subsequent Tales of Arcadia adventures, including the feature film Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
